Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Boumaln dades

Your 3-day desert adventure from Marrakech to Fes begins with a pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. We’ll journey south, crossing the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2260m), enjoying breathtaking views along the way.

Our first major stop is the magnificent Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its stunning earthen clay architecture. This iconic fortified village has served as a backdrop for many epic films, including Gladiator and The Mummy. You’ll have time to explore the Kasbah. 

After lunch in the Ouarzazate area, our route takes us through the lush Skoura Oasis and onwards via the Valley of Roses (famous for its damask roses in spring) towards the dramatic Dades Gorge, sometimes called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs”. Here, you’ll settle into your hotel/riad for dinner and an overnight stay, concluding the first day of your Marrakech to Fes desert tour.

Day 2: Boumaln dades – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Desert Camp

After breakfast, we depart the Dades Valley for another day of incredible scenery. Our journey continues towards Tinghir, a notable town with Berber roots, leading us to the impressive Todra Gorge. These towering limestone cliffs, carved by the Todra River, create a dramatic canyon perfect for a short walk to admire the natural beauty.

Following lunch at a local café, we travel towards Erfoud, known as the “capital of fossils.” You’ll have an opportunity to visit a local workshop to see how marble containing ancient marine fossils is processed. From Erfoud, the landscape shifts as we drive across stony desert plains towards the incredible Erg Chebbi sand dunes near Merzouga.

Here, your camels await to take you on a memorable trek into the heart of the golden dunes. Pause to witness a spectacular desert sunset and capture beautiful photos. Your camel guide will lead you to your traditional Berber desert camp. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious dinner served under a vast canopy of stars, followed by Berber music and drumming around a campfire before spending the night in your comfortable nomad-style tent. This marks the end of your second day on the 3-Days Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane  – Fes

Wake up early to catch the magical desert sunrise painting the Erg Chebbi dunes with colour – a truly unforgettable experience. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll ride your camel back to the edge of the dunes to meet your driver and begin the final leg of your journey towards Fes.

We drive north, passing through the vast Tafilalt palm grove and along the scenic Ziz Valley, characterized by its deep gorge and extensive palm oasis. We’ll stop for panoramic views near Errachidia. Our journey continues to Midelt, situated in the Middle Atlas Mountains and known for its apple orchards and mineral mining. We’ll stop here for lunch.

After lunch, we cross the Middle Atlas, travelling through fragrant cedar forests near Azrou. We’ll make a stop here to observe the wild Barbary macaque monkeys in their natural habitat. Next, we visit Ifrane, often called “Morocco’s Little Switzerland” due to its alpine-style architecture, cleanliness, and cool climate. Built by the French in the 1930s, it’s a popular mountain resort, and we’ll make a brief stop, perhaps seeing the iconic stone lion statue.

Leaving Ifrane, we continue through the rolling hills and agricultural plains before arriving in the historic city of Fes in the late afternoon or early evening. Your driver will drop you off at your designated hotel or riad, marking the end of your memorable 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes.
